Karuna(กรุณา) means Kindness / Kind-hearted or mercy in Thai
Karuna (กรุณา) is a perfume that captures the essence of my childhood memories and the significance of the Songkran festival in Thailand.
Songkran is a traditional New Year’s festival in Thailand and is celebrated annually from April 13th to 15th. It is one of the most important and widely celebrated festivals in the country. During Songkran, people engage in various traditional customs and activities to mark the beginning of the Thai New Year. One of the most prominent aspects of the festival is the water-throwing tradition, where people playfully splash water on each other as a way of cleansing and purifying themselves for the coming year. Besides that, people also visit temples to make merit, offer food to monks, and participate in religious ceremonies. Many families gather together to pay respects to their ancestors and perform rituals to bring good luck and blessings for the upcoming year.
Traditionally, Songkran also involves the pouring of scented water onto Buddha images as a sign of respect and cleansing. This act represents the washing away of the previous year’s misfortunes and starting the new year with purity and good fortune.
The festival is not only celebrated in Thailand but also in neighbouring countries like Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia, where it is known by different names but shares similar customs and traditions.
Overall, the Songkran festival is a time of joy, renewal, and community spirit, as people come together to celebrate the Thai New Year with water, prayers, and acts of kindness.
Karuna (กรุณา) embodies the concept of kindness, which is reflected in the name itself. The perfume combines the fragrances of various elements from my memories, such as the incense from the temple in my hometown in the Southern part of Thailand and the aroma of spices and flowers that were planted around the temple, including Camphor, Jasmine Sambac, Canaga, Tuberose, Cassia, Ebony, Champaca, Bullet wood flower among others. Additionally, it incorporates the scent of precious woods, spices, and herbs from your grandmother’s elder brother’s Chinese herbal medicine shop, which is located in front of that temple that our family always visit during the Songkran festival.
Karuna aims to evoke the feelings of festivity, joy, and kindness that my grandmother showed during these cherished moments. By combining these aromatic elements, the perfume serves as a sensory reminder of my childhood experiences and the values that were instilled in me through my family’s traditions.
The memory of my grandmother’s kindness is a precious and heartfelt recollection. Grandmothers often hold a special place in our lives, with their nurturing nature and unconditional love. Kindness from a grandmother can take many forms and leave a lasting impact on our hearts. The festival itself is a time of joy and celebration, and her presence and acts of kindness during this festive occasion would have made it even more special. Her loving nature made everyone feel welcomed and cherished, these memories can serve as a reminder of the love and warmth she brought to your life.
The kindness of a grandmother is often remembered fondly throughout one’s lifetime. It serves as a source of inspiration and a reminder of the importance of showing compassion and love to others. Cherish these memories and let the kindness my grandmother bestowed upon and guide my actions, spreading that same warmth and love to those around me.
Karuna (กรุณา) is the essence of Thai incense, From balsamic resin notes such as frankincense, myrrh, and benzoin. These resinous and smoky notes will provide a foundation reminiscent of the incense from the Thai temple. Camphor also plays the main part to evoke the freshness and soothing aroma associated with Thai temples too. Jasmine Sambac, Tuberose, Canaga, Champaca and Bullet wood flowers are fragrant flowers commonly found in Thai temples and provide a rich aromatic exotic heady sweet and cream scent. Enhance the exotic sensual aspects of the perfume. The Spices such as Cassia, Tumeric, Nutmeg, Coriander and Cinnamon bring warmth and spicy touch that will complement the other notes and also part of Thai traditional incense. Finally, The woody base notes from precious woods such as Ebony, Patchouli and Sandalwood contribute a smooth and earthy undertone, adding richness and a touch of sophistication to the perfume.
Karuna (กรุณา) holds a deeper significance for me beyond being just a perfume. It represents the memory of happiness and cherished moments from my childhood. This goes beyond the sensory experience of a fragrance and taps into the emotional and nostalgic aspects of your memories. Karuna (กรุณา) can be seen as a vessel or symbol that encapsulates the essence of those joyful moments and the happiness associated with them. It becomes a representation of the love, warmth, and positivity that I experienced during the Songkran festival and my interactions with my grandmother.
The perfume then becomes a tangible reminder, a sensory trigger that can transport me back to those beautiful memories and evoke the emotions and feelings associated with them. It becomes a source of comfort, nostalgia, and a way to reconnect with the happiness and kindness that shaped my childhood. While Karuna (กรุณา) may physically manifest as a perfume, it holds a much deeper significance as a conduit for the memory of happiness and the embodiment of the love and kindness I experienced.
